SC4EU Demonstrator Overview
Core Tools & Capabilities
SaveCrops4EU is a cutting-edge Digital Twin Component (DTC) designed to support agriculture by integrating Earth Observation data, climate modeling, and advanced simulation tools into a single, user-friendly platform. Developed under the ESA Digital Twin Earth (ESA DTE) initiative, it aims to empower farmers, advisors, and policymakers with real-time crop monitoring, predictive analytics, and “what-if” scenario testing to optimize resource use, enhance resilience, and promote sustainable farming. By providing actionable insights on crop health, yield forecasting, and environmental impact, SaveCrops4EU bridges part of the gap between data-driven decision-making and on-the-ground agricultural practices for higher productivity, reduced waste, and climate-smart farming for a more sustainable future.

Real-Time Crop & Land Monitoring
SaveCrops4EU leverages satellite imagery (e.g., Sentinel-2), weather data to provide actionable insights, across Europe, on:
- Crop health metrics (Canopy Nitrogen Content - CNC, Canopy Water Content - CWC, biomass, Leaf Area Index - LAI)
- Soil and water conditions (moisture levels, Nitrogen distribution)
- Field parcel heterogeneity (identifying variations within fields for precision farming)
- Drought and Heat stress indicators for extreme weather event monitoring (droughts, floods, heatwaves)
Users can detect issues early—such as nutrient deficiencies, over fertilization, or water stress—and take corrective actions before yields are affected.

Predictive Analytics for Yield & Risk Forecasting
By combining historical data, climate models, and machine learning, SaveCrops4EU delivers within Germany and soon Hungary:
- Yield predictions under different conditions (helping farmers plan harvests and sales)
- Risk management insights (e.g., production risks, income fluctuations)
Supports food security planning and helps farmers mitigate financial risks linked to climate variability.

“What-If” Scenario Simulator
One of the platform’s more advanced features is the possibility to simulate and test hypothetical scenarios in Germany, allowing users to:
- Optimize resource use (e.g., “What if I reduce fertilizer by 30%? How would the yield be affected compared to no reduction?”)
- Evaluate new farming practices (e.g., “How would adding irrigation affect my yield?”)
- Can be used to Support administrative needs (e.g., loan applications, subsidy compliance, risk management)
Farm Advisors can run multiple scenarios to provide data-backed recommendations, while policymakers can test the effects/needs of new regulations before implementation.

Seamless Integration with Existing Farm Systems
SaveCrops4EU is designed to support working alongside current farm management tools, this will be tested within a Hungarian use case, ensuring minimal disruption while maximizing value:
- Compatibility with Agricultural Knowledge and Information Systems (AKIS)
- Direct data exchange with the platform via API (e.g., nitrogen tracking, water management)
Farmers and farm advisors should be able to continue using their preferred software while enhancing it with advanced analytics.
User-Interface to navigate complex
The platform features a web-based UI with:
- Area of Interest (AOI) selection – Users can upload their farm boundaries (in .json/WGS84 format) or choose from pre-loaded regions.
- Model execution via Jupyter-like notebooks – Simplifies running complex simulations (e.g., nitrogen content, yield forecasting).
- Visual, easy-to-understand outputs – Results are displayed as:
-
Interactive maps (for spatial analysis)
-
Time-series graphs (for tracking trends)
\
-
No advanced technical skills required—the platform is accessible to farmers, advisors, and policymakers alike.
